Brown Repeats as Big South Player of the Year

For the second time in Big South Conference history, a player has repeated as Big South Offensive Player of the Year. Liberty's Mike Brown had one of the most prolific season in Big South history and was honored today with the league's top offensive award.

Last year, Brown became the first sophomore in league history to be named Big South Offensive Player of the Year. The versatile athlete finished the year with 698 receiving yards, 442 rushing yards and 427 passing yards, while scoring 13 times and passing for another four.

This season, Brown took over as Liberty's full-time quarterback and turned in one of the most impressive seasons in program history. The junior finished the year ranked No. 1 in the country in total offense, averaging 346.36 total offensive yards per game.

He was Liberty's leading rusher and passer, as he ran for 854 yards and passed for another 2,956 yards. He was responsible for 32 of the team's 47 touchdowns (68.1 percent) and finished his season ranked No. 5 nationally in points responsible for (17.45 per game).

His 3,810 total offensive yards shattered Liberty's previous record of 3,127 yards set by Phil Basso on 1984. The Walter Payton Award finalist also finished the year ranked No. 9 in passing yards per game (268.73) and No. 8 in total passing yards and passing efficiency (149.63).

Brown was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week five times during the season, setting a new conference record. He received 18 first-place votes and 37 points, ahead of runner-up Zach MacDowall (Coastal Carolina), who received one first-place vote and 12 points.

Coastal Carolina's linebacker Andrae Jacobs was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year, while the Chanticleers' David Bennett was tabbed the league's Coach of the Year.

Gardner-Webb's defensive lineman Preston Pemasa was named Freshman of the Year and Stony Brook quarterback Michael Coulter rounded out the major award winners by being named Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Liberty also dominated the all-conference teams, posting more all-conference selections than any other program in the league for the fifth year in a row. The Flames garnered 13 all-conference selections this year, including nine first-team honorees. Coastal Carolina and Stony Brook finished next with five first-team all-conference selections.
