Tuus advanced the farthest for the Flames, making it to the round of 32 in a strong field.
After opening up ITA Atlantic Regional play on Wednesday at the University of Virginia's Snyder Tennis Center, the Flames' play came to an end after Thursday's action.
Liberty men's tennis players competing in the strong field included Siim Tuus, Mandeep Yadev, Tristan Stayt, Giancarlo Lemmi, and Stanislav Vaughan.
Tuus advanced the farthest for the Flames, making it to the round of 32. In his opening match, Tuus defeated Jan Surovic of Maryland, 6-3, 6-0. Tuus added another straight-set victory in the round of 64 by knocking off VCU's Filip Svensson, 6-3, 7-5, before dropping his next match to the sixth seeded Eddie Bouchier of Penn State, 6-3, 6-1.
Stayt and Lemmi picked up opening round wins to advance to the round of 64 for the Flames. Stayt defeated Virginia's Dino Dell'Orto, 6-1, 6-4, to begin play, while Lemmi defeated Kevin McMillen of George Mason, 7-6 (3), 6-3. However, in the next round, Stayt fell to Bryan Welnetz of Penn State, 6-2, 6-3, while Lemmi was defeated by VCU's Max Wennakoski, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, no Flames combo was able to advance, with Stayt and Lemmi dropping their opening match with Bertrand Moulin and Florent Sentenac of James Madison, 8-5, and Vaughan and Tuus falling to the VCU duo, Tim Johannsen and Jaime Vazquez, 8-6.
The champions of the singles and doubles bracket will qualify for the 2010 ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 4-7 in Flushing, N.Y. The Atlantic Regional, which includes schools from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia, is slated to finish play on Sunday, Oct. 24.
The men's tennis team will finish their fall play in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while competing in the Alabama Fall Invitational, Nov. 5-7.
