McConnell Wins Richmond Invitational Title

Final Results - Richmond Invitational

Freshman Ian McConnell carded back-to-back sub-70 rounds to close out the Richmond Invitational and capture medalist honors in the event, which wrapped up competition earlier on Tuesday.

McConnell, one of four Liberty golfers competing as an individual in the tournament, posted a seven-under par 209, thanks to three stellar rounds of golf on the Independence Golf Club.

The rookie opened yesterday's morning flight with an even par 72, followed by a four-under par 68 during the afternoon round, which had McConnell tied for fifth place after 36 holes. The freshman was one of two golfers in the 69-man field to break 70 on Tuesday, carding a three-under par to climb to the top of the leaderboard and capture medalist honors.

During the 54-hole event, McConnell posted 13 birdies and was one of 15 players with an eagle. The rookie took advantage of the par-5s, as he finished a combined five-under par on those holes, while ranking second in the field with a two-under par aggregate score on the par-4 holes.

Also finishing for the Flames as individuals were Stephen Dooley, who finished seventh with a three-under par 213 (72-69-72), Chris Watters, who was tied for 16th with a two-over par 218 (73-74-71), and Jordan Frye, who finished in 25th place with a five-over par 221 (70-78-73).

Host Richmond won the event, which was played on the par-72, 7,127-yard course, by four strokes over James Madison. The Spiders posted a nine-under par 855 (283-279-293), while the Dukes posted a five-under par 859 (292-276-291) in the 11-team field.
