The 16th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 16. A sold-out group of 120 golfers battled for prizes in four flights.
The winning team was captained by former LU golf coach Frank Landry. His team of Jim Borland, Jim Shaner and Zack Bauchou tied for the lead at 17-under on the day and then won a card match playoff to capture the title.
The second-place Universal T's team of Brian Betham, Ed Barnhouse, LU soccer coach Jeff Alder and Dan Taylor carded an identical 17-under score.
Skill prizes were contested for longest putt, two longest drives and four closest to the pin on each par three. Hole-in-one prizes were offered on all the par three holes, but no one cashed in on the major prizes. The prime prize offered was a Chick-fil-A Odyssey two-ball putter valued at more than $175 which was won by Lee Beaumont who nailed a 29-foot, double-breaking putt on the 18th hole.
Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 11 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 45 golfers who purchased the mulligan package received door prizes supplied by Lynchburg area businesses that ranged from dinners at quality dining establishments to golf equipment and Liberty logo merchandise. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf shirt and Callaway golf balls among other gifts supplied by sponsors.
Sponsorship support for the event was unsurpassed in previous events, beginning with the involvement of Chick-fil-A (title), Panera Bread (presenting/practice tee), UBS Financial (ball), L.A. Communications (shirt) and LU Dining (drinks), which were all major sponsors. In addition, all available sponsorship opportunities were sold to partners of Liberty University Athletics.
"A lot of people worked very hard to plan and direct this event," said tournament director Kevin Keys, LU Assistant AD-External Affairs. "We wanted this event to be a great experience for each and every golfer who participated. This is going to become the golfing event that golfers look forward to playing in the most each season, which was our goal when we brought this event back under University control this year. We believe we set the tone and went a long way toward that goal in our inaugural tournament."
"We already have sponsors and participants asking about next year. The comments have been very positive. Our staff and volunteers hit a homerun with the experience enjoyed by the participants."
The date for the 17th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 15, 2007.
