Dunton Announces Okon As Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Liberty University head men's basketball coach Randy Dunton has announced the addition of Dominic Okon as assistant coach, completing his coaching staff for the upcoming 2006-07 season.

"The hiring of Dominic Okon is another huge positive for Liberty Basketball," commented Dunton. "Having spent eight years at the side of Coach Gene Bess within one of the nation's best renowned junior college programs has provided Dominic with tremendous preparation that will serve our program."

"He is a proven recruiter and relentless worker," continued Dunton. "Dominic has been a winner both on the court and on the sidelines. With his history of international recruiting successes, it is exciting to anticipate an immediate impact in the future of our overseas connections."

Okon comes to Liberty after spending eight years as assistant men's basketball coach at Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Okon helped the Raiders to an impressive 197-62 record over the past eight seasons, while aiding Three Rivers in claming two regional titles and a trip the national tournament.

During his tenure, Okon assisted in the development of four All-Americans, while over 30 players under his tutelage moved on to four-year schools.

While at Three Rivers, Okon was responsible for on-court coaching, recruiting, scouting, and player development. He also assisted the Raiders as he was in charge of athletic administration which included athletic insurance, athletic eligibility, study hall monitor and housing supervision.

"My commitment is to develop young men to experience a successful career and prepare for life after graduation," stated Okon. "I am excited to be part of the basketball family at Liberty University, well known not just for the athletic program but also for the spiritual development of young people."

Okon was a four-year collegiate basketball player, including three seasons at Three Rivers and a year at Loyola University of Chicago where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology. While at Three Rivers, Okon earned all-conference and all-region honors and led the team to a 59-12 record, two region titles and a fifth-place finish at the national tournament.

After college, Okon represented the Nigerian national team in various international basketball tournaments, including the World Cup in Athens, Greece in 1998.
