Geren Woodbridge ranks second in the Liberty Open heptathlon with 2,769 points, through Friday's four events.

Liberty redshirt junior Geren Woodbridge got off to a strong start in the heptathlon, Friday at the Liberty Open. He sits in second place through four events at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center, after posting his best-ever day one score.

Woodbridge (Allentown, Pa.) tallied 2,769 points, putting him just 29 points behind current leader Kyle Steiner, a two-time NCAA Division III national runner-up in the decathlon during his career at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Meanwhile, Liberty's Drew Edwards (So., Anchorage, Alaska) ranks sixth in the 12-member field with 2,461 points.

Woodbridge opened up the day by matching his personal best in the 60-meter dash, at 7.30 seconds. He then long jumped 20-9 before leading all of the competitors with a 41-11.25 shot put. The defending Big South heptathlon champion closed his evening with a personal-best 6-1.25 clearance in the high jump.

Edwards was able to set new season bests in both jumping events. He reached 19-11.75 in the long jump, before high jumping 5-9.75.

One Tolsma Indoor Track Center facility record was set on Friday. The Appalachian State men's 4 x 800 relay quartet clocked a winning time of 7:49.34, shattering VMI's record of 7:52.03 from 2005.

Due to the forecasted inclement weather, the schedule for Saturday's action at the Liberty Open has been adjusted slightly. Field events will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the men's weight throw, and the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims will kick off the running events at 11 a.m. A complete revised Saturday schedule will be posted on later this evening.
