Three Liberty women's soccer players have received postseason honors after a successful 2009 campaign. Maria Owen and Silvia Betancourt were named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State second team, while Rachel Wisehart was named an honorable mention Scholar All-East Region. Owen and Betancourt were also named to the 2009 Big South all-conference team, and Wisehart was a Big South All-Academic Team selection. Owen, a junior forward from Mount Jackson, Va., led the team with 16 points and four assists. She also led the Big South with 37 shots on the year. Betancourt, a sophomore midfielder from San Jose, Costa Rica, started all 19 contests and led the squad with seven goals. Senior defender Rachel Wisehart, a native of Concord, N.C., was part of a Liberty defense that did not allow a goal in 576 minutes and recorded six shutouts. The team captain recorded her first career assist in a 1-0 victory over Longwood on Sept. 30. She also served as president of the Liberty Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the second consecutive year. The Lady Flames ended the season with an overall record of 9-7-3 and claimed the Big South regular-season title. Head coach Jessica Hain was named the Big South Coach of the Year.
