Geren Woodbridge heaved the shot put a personal-best 43-1, highlighting his strong first day of the heptathlon at the Liberty Kickoff.

Defending Big South men's heptathlon champion Geren Woodbridge got his 2009-10 indoor track & field season off to a successful start, Wednesday afternoon at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center. The Liberty redshirt junior posted personal-best marks in the 60-meter dash and shot put, putting him in the heptathlon lead after day one of the Liberty Kickoff.

Woodbridge (Allentown, Pa.) tallied 2,748 points during Wednesday's four disciplines, opening up a 79-point advantage on Liberty freshman Jacob DeValve (Manchester, Conn.), who is competing unattached at this meet. The Flames' other competitor, sophomore Drew Edwards (Anchorage, Alaska), currently ranks fourth in the eight-member field, which consists solely of Big South Conference athletes. Edwards' first-day score was 2,454.

Woodbridge opened his day with a 7.30 clocking in the 60-meter dash, shaving .02 off of his previous personal best. He then took over the heptathlon lead after long jumping 20-6.25. The Keystone State native's longest shot put attempt reached a personal-best 43-1, before he closed out the competition with a successful high jump clearance at 6-0.

Edwards bookended his day with a pair of personal bests. He ran 7.36 for the 60-meter dash and high jumped 5-7.25.

The Liberty Kickoff will resume Thursday at noon, when the women's pentathlon gets underway with the 60-meter hurdles. The men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles will follow at 12:30 p.m. The day's first field event, the men's weight throw, is set for a 3:30 p.m. start. Running events will commence at 5 p.m., with the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims.
