Liberty Squads Finish Second in Opening Meet

Both the Liberty men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2009 season with second-place finishes at the Virginia Tech Cross Country Relay, Friday night, in Blacksburg, Va. The host Hokies were victorious in both the men's and women's events.

The Lady Flames duo of redshirt freshman Jennifer Klugh (Centerburg, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Katie Albright (Wake Forest, N.C.) finished fourth overall, teaming up to clock a 38:12, as each ran a pair of 2.5K legs. The winning duo, Lindsey King and Jessica Trapeni of Virginia Tech, finished with a time of 37:22. Liberty freshmen Taylor Bowles (Noblesville, Ind.) and Khristina Kanagy (Vilas, N.C.) placed ninth with a time of 39:10, immediately followed by Denise Troyer (So., Kennedyville, Md.) and Hannah Hunt (So., Sewickley, Pa.) with a time of 39:20.

Alicia Guridy (R-So., Tappahannock, Va.) and Rod'Esther Castor (Jr., Hamilton, N.J.) teamed up for a 13th-place finish (39:31), while freshmen Betel Yosef (Alexandria, Va.) and Marybeth Carlson (Plymouth, Mass.) finished 14th, clocking a time of 39:36. Rounding out the Lady Flames' runners was the team of Lyndi Fielitz (Fr., Walden, N.Y.) and Aleah Teer (Fr., Abbotsford, British Columbia), which placed 18th with a time of 42:09.

The Lady Flames recorded a team score of 23 points, which was good for a second-place finish behind the Hokies with 10 points. Concord finished third with 37 points, followed by Radford with 39 points and VCU with 43.

In the men's race, Liberty relay duos claimed both the fifth and sixth positions. David Ricksecker (So., Laurel, Del.) and Will Reeves (R-So., Rustburg, Va.) teamed up to clock an overall time of 45:48, with each running two 3.5K legs, to finish fifth. The team of Kyle Powers (So., Waterford, Vt.) and Mark Hopely (R-So., Carney's Point, N.J.) came in sixth with a time of 45:53.
Andrew Rigler (Fr., Altavista, Va.) and Spencer Jackson (R-Fr., Surrey, British Columbia) teamed up for a 13th-place finish with a time of 47:15, while Isaac Wendland (R-Fr. Charles City, Iowa) and Ryan Cox (So., Anchorage, Alaska) placed 16th with an overall time of 48:02.

Virginia Tech dominated the men's race, claiming the top three spots, including a winning time of 45:05 from Jason Cusack and Chris Walizer. The Hokies won the event with a perfect score of six points, followed by Liberty with 24 points, Concord with 41 points and Radford with 70 points.

Liberty will return to action on Sept. 19 at the Big South Preview, which will take place in Winston-Salem, N.C. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
