Liberty's Beth Bennett and Tiffani Smith were named to the 2009 VaSID University Division All-State Softball Team, the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced today. Bennett received first-team honors, while Smith nabbed a spot on the second team.

Bennett, who was also a VaSID first-team all-state honoree as a junior in 2008, recently capped off her stellar collegiate career by leading the Lady Flames to the Big South Championship title game for the second consecutive year. She led the Lady Flames in nine statistical categories, including batting average (.294), RBIs (34), home runs (11) and walks (28). Her 11 home runs also ranked second in the Big South, and her 48 total hits ranked second for Liberty.

Bennett finished her senior season ranked in seven different career Top 5 categories at Liberty, and started every game of her career, moving her into first place in the program's games started category (242). The first baseman was also named to the 2009 Big South All-Academic Team. On April 22, Bennett was honored with Liberty's Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award, the highest honor presented to a Liberty student-athlete.

Smith, a sophomore, had a banner year for the Lady Flames in the circle, highlighted by her first career no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Delaware State on Feb. 28. Smith, who was a Big South first-team all-conference honoree and was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week on March 3 and April 13, led the Big South with a 2.21 ERA, and ranked second in the conference with 174 strikeouts. She also set a new school record with 16 strikeouts in a single game, as the Lady Flames defeated Presbyterian, 3-1, on April 24. Smith gave up two or fewer earned runs in eight out of 10 conference appearances, and led the squad in conference ERA (2.11) and conference opposing batting average (.215).
