With less than a week remaining before the Flames open their 2009 spring football practice season, installation on the new FieldTurf is nearing completion, as of late Friday afternoon.

Inclement weather in the Central Virginia area has hampered workers several days during the past month, but clearer skies during this past week have led to significant advances toward the project's completion.

Over 90 percent of the entire field's surface has been installed, leaving just the outer layers of turf on both team sidelines left to be installed. The Liberty Flames logo at the 50-yard line has been completed, along with the "LIBERTY" lettering in both end zones.

Besides completion of the outer edges of the green FieldTurf near the team bench areas, the installation crew is now working to cut in the hash marks and yardage markers.

Weather over the next several days looks favorable for installation conditions, leaving the project on schedule for completion.

The Flames are currently slated to open their spring practice schedule on Thursday evening, under the lights inside Williams Stadium at 7 p.m.
