No. 9 Lady Vols Downs Lady Flames in Five

The Lady Vols had two five-run innings and three home runs en route to an 11-1 victory for No. 9 Tennessee over Liberty, Tuesday afternoon, in Knoxville, Tenn.

Liberty freshman Jenny Law led off the top of the first with a single up the middle. She was then thrown out at second on a fielder's choice when J'nae Jefferson hit a grounder to short.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jessica Spigner belted a double deep to center field, scoring Tiffany Huff, to put the Lady Vols on the board, 1-0. The Liberty defense got out of the inning when Erin Webb grounded out to third base, stranding two runners.

Danielle Howard and Kelly Strickland struck out swinging to kick off the second inning. Keely McMillon then reached second on a throwing error by Tennessee shortstop Ashley Andrews. Amber DePasquale grounded out to third to end the half-inning.

Tennessee scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, and Brittany Keeney entered the game to relieve Liberty starting pitcher Sarah Ellis.

Liberty remained scoreless in the top of the third inning. Law grounded out to third base, Jefferson struck out swinging and designated player Ashley Bensinger flied out to right field.

Fryer hit her second home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the third for the Lady Vols, making the score 7-0. After Andrews singled up the middle, Tiffany Huff belted a three-run homer to right-center to extend the lead to 10-0. After Tiffani Smith entered the game for the Lady Flames in the circle, Spigner hit a home run to left field, making the score 11-0.

Smith struck out Shelby Burschell and Erin Webb for the second and third outs, getting Liberty out of the costly inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, Beth Bennett grounded out to third. Kaylee West lined out to third and Danielle Howard struck out swinging for a three-up, three-down half-inning.

Cassie Hendrix led off the top of the fifth with a single to left field, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by McMillon. Hendrix then scored Liberty's first run of the day when Jenna Eatmon hit a deep shot to center field and advanced to second on the throw.

But Liberty could not continue the hitting streak, as Law grounded out to third and Jefferson struck out to end the game.

Tennessee was led offensively by Spigner, who was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Eatmon was the offensive leader for Liberty, batting 1-for-1 with an RBI. Hendrix was 1-for-1 with a run scored, and Law batted 1-for-3.

Cat Hosfield (11-1) earned the win in the circle for Tennessee, pitching four innings and giving up one hit while striking out four batters. Ellis (0-4) took the loss, giving up seven hits and fanning one batter.

Liberty is back in action this weekend in Wilmington, N.C., as the Lady Flames compete in the Seahawk Classic on the campus of UNC Wilmington.
