Kallie Corbin (left) and Chelaine McCarty gave Liberty a pair of AVCA All-Region honorees in the same season for the first time in program history.

For the first time in program history, two Liberty players have been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in the same season. Junior setter Kallie Corbin is an AVCA All-East Region selection, while junior middle blocker Chelaine McCarty garnered honorable mention All-East Region distinction.

Corbin (Beaverton, Ore.) and McCarty (Houston, Ala.) become the fourth and fifth Liberty players honored by the AVCA since the Lady Flames began playing NCAA Division I volleyball in 1988. Theresa Bream was named to the All-South Region second team in 1990 and Anthonia Akpama was a first-team All-District 3 honoree in 1999. Most recently, Nicki Scripko (So., OH/RS, Fayetteville, N.C.) earned honorable mention All-East Region selection last season, as a freshman.

Corbin, one of two setters included on the All-East Region team, will now be under consideration for the AVCA Division I All-America teams, which will be announced Dec. 17.

Corbin and McCarty were two of the three Big South players honored by the AVCA on Wednesday. Winthrop senior outside hitter Shannon Sitzmann joined McCarty on the honorable mention list.

Corbin's first AVCA recognition comes during a season of firsts for the Lady Flames' highly-decorated setter. She became the first setter to be named Big South Player of the Year since 1995 and was the first player in conference history ever to capture back-to-back Big South Championship MVP honors. Corbin was the Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 27 and was a two-time Top Performer (Nov. 18 & 25).

Corbin paced the Lady Flames in both assists (1,144) and service aces (45), ranking second in the Big South in both categories. She has now recorded Liberty's three highest single-season ace totals since rally scoring was instituted in 2001. Corbin boosted her career marks to 3,843 assists and 1,114 digs, making her the first player in program history to exceed 3,500 career assists and 1,000 career digs.

Meanwhile, McCarty was a second-team All-Big South performer for the second season in a row. The Big South Player of the Week on Oct. 13, she made four all-tournament teams during the season (VCU Third Degree Sportswear Invitational, Patriot Invitational, Varney's Kansas State Invitational and Golden Dome Invitational).

McCarty led the Big South Conference and set a Liberty rally-scoring record with a .353 attack percentage for the year. A consistent attacker, McCarty hit .300 or higher during 25 of the Lady Flames' 34 matches. She also ranked second on the team in both kills (322) and blocks (86). McCarty equaled the Liberty rally-scoring record for a single match, by tallying a career-high 11 blocks during the Lady Flames' 3-2 victory at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 1.

The Liberty junior duo helped the Lady Flames go 25-9 during the 2008 season and repeat as Big South champions for the first time in program history. Liberty then won a set in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship for the second year in a row, dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 4 national seed Nebraska on Dec. 5.
