The Liberty men's soccer team completed its 2008 season tied for the seventh-longest current unbeaten streak in the nation.

The Flames closed the season unbeaten in their last eight contests. Liberty finished the year with a 5-0-3 record in its last eight matches, a streak which started on Oct. 14 with a 3-0 victory over Southern Virginia. The eight-game streak ties the Flames for the seventh-longest unbeaten streak in the country with UCLA. Mid-American Conference Champion and No. 4-ranked Akron has the longest unbeaten streak in the nation, running off 16 consecutive games without a loss (13-0-3).

The Flames' current streak is the third longest in program history. The longest unbeaten streak ever by a Liberty team was in 1985, as the Flames opened the year without dropping a contest over 14 games (12-0-2).

Liberty also finished the year tied for 11th in the final South Atlantic Regional Poll with VCU. Maryland topped the final regional ranking.

"I'm very proud of this group and what they accomplished on and off the field of play this year," stated Liberty Head Coach Jeff Alder. "We lost nine seniors from last year's Big South Championship team and then we had to overcome the loss of Darren Amoo, who was ranked seventh in the country in scoring after the third game of the season, with a knee injury.

"This group really grew together as the season progressed, which was a true blessing for our staff to witness each day. The run that we had to finish the season was quite remarkable, and it is just a shame that we ran out of time. I felt we were playing our best soccer in the tournament and did well enough to earn a tie with a tremendous Winthrop team. The relationships that were forged this year and the lessons learned through the soccer experience will make all of us better in the future."

The Flames completed 2008 with a 10-5-3 mark. It was the second consecutive season Liberty has won 10 games, after last year's 13-5-2 record. It is the first time since 1998 and 1999 that the Flames have posted two consecutive 10-win seasons.
