Gelatt Garners Academic All-District Honor

Liberty men's soccer player Mike Gelatt has been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District III first team, for his excellence in the classroom and on the soccer field.

Gelatt, a redshirt senior, was named to the district's first team for the second consecutive year, after being selected to the squad in 2007. The defender went on to be named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Men's Soccer Academic All-America University Division first team, becoming one of only 14 Liberty student-athletes to be named to a NCAA Division I CoSIDA Academic All-America team and the fifth Flames' student-athlete to be selected to a first team. He joins Liberty track student-athletes Clendon Henderson (2008), Danielle McNaney (2005), track and cross country student-athlete Heather Sagan (2002) and football student-athlete Jarrod Everson (1998), as Liberty's all-time first-team members.

Gelatt, a defender, has started all 14 Liberty contests this season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native has been a key member of the Flames' defense, which has posted four shutouts this season, in helping Liberty to a 8-5-1 overall mark and 3-3 record in conference play. This season, Liberty has allowed 1.43 goals per game. Unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1), the Flames are yielding just .50 goals per contest during the stretch.

Gelatt has started 49 straight games over the past three seasons. Last season, he was garnered first team All-Big South honors and helped the Flames capture their first-ever Big South title. In addition, Liberty made its first NCAA Tournament appearance, while recording a 13-5-2 mark.

Off the field, the senior has excelled in the classroom, currently maintaining a 3.83 GPA in kinesiology with a pre-med curriculum. He also is minoring in business and chemistry. He has been a Dean's List member every semester during his time at Liberty. In addition, the defender has earned academic recognition by being to the 2007 Big South Men's Soccer All-Academic team and VaSID All-State academic team. He has been named to the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll the past four academic years.

Gelatt now moves on for national Academic All-America team consideration. He and the Flames travel to VMI for a conference match, Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field in Lexington, Va.. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
