Freshman Patrick Nyarko's goal in the 52nd minute of action lifted the Virginia Tech Hokies to 1-0 win over the Liberty Flames Tuesday evening at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium.
Nyarko received a long pass from redshirt sophomore Scott Spangler along the left side of the box. After gaining possession close to the endline, he crossed the ball to his right foot, turned and scored the game's only goal into the lower left corner of the net. Nyarko's goal was his second of the season and his first game-winner.
Tech outshot Liberty 17-6 for the game, including a 10-4 margin in the second half.
Nyarko and Spangler each had a game-high four shots for Virginia Tech, while Toby Lewis (So., F, Morrison, Colo.) had three shots to lead the Flames.
Liberty goalkeeper Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Mich.) made five saves on the evening, while the Hokies' Chase Harrison tallied two. Tech was also credited with one team save.
The win ups the Hokies' record to 4-3-3 overall while the Flames fall to 3-4-2 on the season. The non-conference loss snaps Liberty's four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1).
Liberty continues non-conference play Saturday as the Flames travel to Farmville, Va. for a contest with Longwood. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
