The Liberty wrestling team has garnered its first-ever Sparky, taking home the award for 2007-08's Biggest Win. The Flames earned the honor by capturing their second NCAA East Regional Championship in a row, March 9, 2008 at the Vines Center.

Voting is now open for Best Individual Performance, the second of five award categories in the 2008 Sparkys. The five nominees include outstanding efforts by Dominic Bolden, Josh McDougal, Anthony Smith, Megan Frazee and Clendon Henderson. The 2008 NCAA East Regional Wrestling Championship was the first NCAA championship event ever hosted by Liberty. The Flames' grapplers did not disappoint their home fans, as the squad rolled to its second consecutive regional team title.

Liberty outdistanced runner-up Gardner-Webb by 41 points and saw six of its 10 competitors win their respective weight classes. Christian Smith (133 pounds), Tim Harner (141), Chad Porter (165), Aaron Kelley (174), Chris Daggett (184) and Patrick Walker (Heavyweight) all claimed first-place honors and advanced to the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championship in St. Louis.

Head coach Jesse Castro was named NCAA East Regional Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, after guiding his squad to a dominating performance. To read the full tournament recap, click here.

Liberty fans now have the opportunity to choose the past year's Best Individual Performance from among the following five options: Dominic Bolden's 264 all-purpose yards and three TDs against VMI, Josh McDougal's NCAA National Cross Country title, Anthony Smith's 30-point, 10-rebound outburst versus VMI in the Big South Championship, Megan Frazee's 26 points and game-winning hoop in the Big South Championship title contest and Clendon Henderson's third-place finish in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

A year ago, Alex McLean of the men's basketball team garnered the inaugural Sparky for Best Individual Performance, as a result of his 40-point, 19-rebound effort in a road victory at VMI on Feb. 21, 2007.

The poll for Best Individual Performance will remain open until Aug. 4, at which time the winner will be announced on and balloting for Best Newcomer will begin. A full voting schedule appears below.
