Two Liberty men's distance runners were recognized by the ASUN Conference on Wednesday, as Felix Kandie was named Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Caleb Olson was tabbed Men's Freshman of the Week.
A junior All-American from Eldoret, Kenya, Kandie earned his second ASUN Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor and first since April 24, 2019. He placed 13th in the Sound Running College Invite men's 5K on Friday with a time of 14:07.77 that shaved 10 seconds off his previous personal best. The time ranks No. 1 in the ASUN and No. 62 nationally this season. It also puts Kandie at No. 8 on Liberty's all-time top 10 list.
Olson, who shared his honor with North Florida's Jake Turner, made a successful collegiate outdoor track & field debut at the VertKlasse Meeting on Thursday. He finished as the men's 5K runner-up in 14:51.90, improving his personal best by 11 seconds. This is the first ASUN weekly award of Olson's career.
Liberty will send a group of hurdlers and field event athletes to Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C., for Saturday's Aggie Invitational. The one-day meet will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's long jump, women's javelin, men's long jump and men's discus.
