The sixth-ranked Liberty Lady Flames field hockey squad topped the visiting Temple Owls 4-2 in game one of a two-game weekend series, Saturday afternoon at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.

Liberty sophomore defender Bethany Dykema notched a career-best two goals and an assist for a career-high five points, while her teammate Jodie Conolly had her best performance in a Liberty uniform with four points (1 g, 2 a).

All six goals in the game were scored on penalty corners, with Liberty earning a season-best 14 penalty corners in the contest.

Liberty improves to 11-2 this season and 9-2 in BIG EAST competition. Temple slips to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in conference. The Lady Flames are 3-0 versus the Owls in 2021 and will look to complete the regular season sweep tomorrow.

Turning Point
Liberty scored goals in the final minute in three of the four quarters. The second instance came with 40 seconds to play in the opening half and the game tied 1-1. The Lady Flames' Conolly scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Lizzie Hamlett and Bethany Dykema, at 29:20 to send the home side into the locker room with a 2-1 advantage.

Liberty led 3-1 following a Bethany Dykema goal at the 49:48 mark, assisted by Rhodes, but Temple responded with a goal from Nienke Oerlemans just 50 seconds later (50:38) to make it a one-goal game again (3-2).

The Lady Flames closed the game strong and converted on their 14th and final penalty corner of the day. Once again, Dykema struck with a sweep into the cage from the left post with two seconds left in the contest (59:58), a goal which was assisted by Conolly and brought the final score to 4-2.

Key Stats & Notes
• Liberty attempted a season-high 27 shots, 10 of which were on cage. Temple managed six shots, with five of those coming in the fourth quarter. The Lady Flames outshot the Owls 17-1 in the first half.
• Bethany Dykema's first career two-goal game and five-point effort gives her three goals, nine assists (second on team) and 15 points (third on team) this season.  
• Lizzie Hamlett's goal, which came at the 14:31 mark of the game, was her first of the season and seventh career goal.
• Today's game was the first time this season that Liberty did not receive a goal from either of its top two scorers, Rhodes and Bolton.
• Liberty is now 8-1 all-time against Temple, including a 7-0 mark in BIG EAST matches versus the Owls. In those seven league contests, Liberty has outscored Temple 33-6.
