Head Coach Danny Rocco and the Flames will open the 2009 season against West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va.

After taking a year off against NCAA Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) opponents, the Flames will return to action against one of the nation's best football programs in 2009 when Liberty opens the season at West Virginia on Sept. 5. Kickoff at Milan Puskar Stadium (60,000) will be determined at a later date.

"We are all very excited about this announcement, as we look forward to the opportunity to play against such a great team as West Virginia," commented head coach Danny Rocco. "This is another indication of the direction that our program is moving, as such a game will have a very positive impact.

"As we continue to build and look toward the future, this game will help our recruiting efforts not only in our home state, but also in this region of the country. I know that our staff, players, alumni and fans will all be looking forward to our trip to Morgantown to open the 2009 season."

Liberty recently released its 2008 slate of football contests, featuring contests against 10 NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) opponents and two NCAA Division II foes. The 2008 season will break a string of nine-consecutive seasons during which Liberty had faced an NCAA Division I FBS foe.

West Virginia finished this past season with a 48-28 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma, claiming victory at the 2008 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Mountaineers ranked No. 6 in both the Associated Press and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 polls at year's end, marking the third-straight year West Virginia has finished the season ranked among the Top 10.

The match-up with West Virginia, out of the Big East Conference, will be Liberty's third against a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conference-affiliated opponent.

The Flames' first from a BCS conference came in 2005, when Liberty traveled to East Hartford, Conn., to face Connecticut, who also hails from the Big East.

Liberty's most recent BCS conference foe was in 2006. During Rocco's first season, the head coach squared off against his alma mater, Wake Forest, out of the Atlantic Coast Conference in Winston-Salem, N.C.
