Makaela Kestner has been named ASUN Newcomer of the Week for the first time in her career.
After playing a key role in Liberty's weekend sweep at Kennesaw State, redshirt sophomore wing Makaela Kestner has been named ASUN Conference Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week.
Kestner's first ASUN Newcomer of the Week honor comes after she averaged 8.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 2.0 spg during the Lady Flames' pair of wins at Kennesaw State. The Manassas, Va., native shot 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from beyond the arc for the weekend.
On Saturday, Kestner knocked down two triples during the Lady Flames' game-opening 15-0 run. That set the tone for Liberty's 76-59 series-opening victory.
Kestner then set career highs for points (11), three-pointers made (3) and steals (3) while also grabbing seven rebounds during the Lady Flames' 60-50 win on Sunday. Eight of her points came during a decisive 12-0 fourth-quarter run, which boosted Liberty's run from one to 13 points.
Kestner has started all 11 games during her first season as a Lady Flame after transferring from South Florida. For the year, she is averaging 4.9 ppg and 3.9 rpg with 11 three-pointers made.
Riding a seven-game winning streak, Liberty is 8-3 overall and sits atop the ASUN standings with a 4-0 conference record. The Lady Flames will play host to North Alabama (3-8, 2-0 ASUN), who is also unbeaten in conference play, Saturday and Sunday at Liberty Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. each afternoon.
