(L-R) Lindsey Cohee and Maddie Freece swept CCSA weekly honors.
Following a successful opening weekend to its 2020-21 season, Liberty senior Lindsey Cohee and freshman Maddie Freece have been honored by the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) with weekly honors.
Cohee was named CCSA Women's Swimmer of the Week, while Freece was tabbed CCSA Women's Diver of the Week. Both athletes have earned their first career CCSA weekly honors. This is the third time in program history that Liberty has received both CCSA weekly awards in the same week, and first since Oct. 31, 2018 when Mikayla Herich (swimmer) and Olivia Robinson (diver) earned the honors.
Freece and Cohee helped Liberty extend its CCSA dual-meeting winning streak to 22 with a pair of wins at UNC Asheville and at Campbell.
Hailing from Lansdale, Pa., Freece had the best debut of a Liberty diver in program history, earning a pair of first-place finishes at a meet at UNC Asheville on Friday night. In a meet that featured two one-meter diving sessions, she started the evening by tying for first in one-meter with teammate Olivia Robinson. Freece earned a spot in the 2021 NCAA Zone Diving Championships with her score of 281.80. During the second one-meter diving session, she edged Robinson out by one point for the event victory (259.30 to 258.30). Freece's 281.80 score is tied for second in program history in the event.
Freece is the fourth Lady Flame all-time to qualify for NCAA Zone Championships, but the first to do so in her first collegiate meet.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Cohee won every individual event she entered in this weekend's two season-opening meets (wins at UNC Asheville and Campbell). She got better as the weekend progressed, improving both her 100 fly and 200 fly times from Friday to Saturday.
On Friday at UNC Asheville, Cohee helped Liberty win the 400 medley relay in 3:54.95, swimming 58.03 for the third leg. Cohee won the 200 fly in 2:06.92, defeating UNC Asheville's top competitor by 3.9 seconds. She later claimed the 100 fly in 58.51. During Saturday's victory over Campbell, The senior continued her dominance in the 200 fly, dropping 2.05 seconds off of Friday night's time to win in 2:04.91. She beat the nearest competitor by 3.54 seconds. Later in the meet, she claimed the 100 fly in 57.13.
Liberty will next host the TYR '85 Invite, Nov. 20-22 at Liberty Natatorium. Please check back to LibertyFlames.com for the latest schedule updates.
