Liberty celebrates its team title at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

In conjunction with each institution's sports information office, the ASUN Conference has announced each member school's top team in men's track & field program history. Paced by NCAA national champion Sam Chelanga, 2011 was recognized as Liberty's top team, with the 1996, 2008 and 2019 squads each earning honorable mention.

Top Men's Track & Field Season – 2011
Chelanga capped off his Liberty career in style, winning the 5K title at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships during his final race as a Flame. The 14-time All-American also placed second in the 10K, helping Liberty achieve its best-ever team finish (tie for 12th place with Illinois, Texas and USC) at the NCAA meet.

Highlighted by Taylor Courtney's surprise victory in the 500, the Flames equaled their best-ever showing (tie for second place) at the 2011 IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships. Liberty racked up 46 IC4A team points at the event without utilizing Chelanga, the 5K national runner-up at the following week's 2011 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Liberty was victorious at the Big South Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the fifth year in a row, winning the two team trophies by a combined 161 points.

Honorable Mention – 1996, 2008 and 2019
The 1996 Flames are best known for winning the program's first title at the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In order to do so, Liberty had to defeat the reigning NCAA Division I indoor national champions (George Mason) on their home track. Decathlete Ryan Werner was an All-American for the third consecutive season.

A highly-decorated senior class (Jon Hart, Clendon Henderson, Brandon Hoskins and Josh McDougal) spearheaded a successful 2008 season. Liberty won its second straight IC4A outdoor championship while placing second indoors. The Flames also recorded their best team finish (seventh) at the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships.

The 2019 Flames were victorious at both the ASUN Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, halting Kennesaw State's lengthy reign atop the conference standings. A program-record four Flames (Felix Kandie, Azaria Kirwa, Alejandro Perlaza Zapata and Denzel Pratt) earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

During the coming weeks, the ASUN Conference will continue revealing each member's top seasons in each sport the conference sponsors.
