Liberty men's tennis' Thando Longwe-Smit has been recognized as one of the Top 200 young South Africans for 2020.
Longwe-Smit, a redshirt freshman for the Flames, garnered the distinction from the Mail & Guardian, a weekly newspaper and website in Johannesburg, South Africa. Longwe-Smit, a native of Kensington, South Africa, was one of six South African athletes featured on page 98 of the publication and was also showcased on page 83.
The listing features South Africans in sport, arts & entertainment, business, entrepreneurship & tourism, civil society, environment, education, COVID-19 heroes, film & media, health, justice & law, politics & government and science & technology.
"Thando is a great athlete who has developed top-notch training disciplines," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt. "We can count on him to bring the energy and focus it takes to compete his best every day. This points to a bright future for him and the team."
Longwe-Smit, a sport psychology major, joined the Flames last January. During his junior tennis career, he was the No. 1-ranked U18 player in the South Africa Tennis Federation rankings. Longwe-Smit represented his country at the U21 Africa Youth Games and won the doubles event prior to coming to Liberty.
His other junior tennis accomplishments include: ITF G5 singles champion, ITF G3 doubles winner and runner-up finishes at the ITF G3 in Pretoria and ITF G5 in Potchefstroom.
