Recognized as two of the top basketball minds in the ASUN Conference, Liberty's assistant coaches Derek Johnston and Brad Soucie were named as two of the top five assistant coaches in the ASUN Conference in Jeff Goodman's article on Stadium.
Goodman compiled a list of top five assistant coaches in the ASUN Conference. For each conference, Goodman polled at least 20 coaches (primarily assistants) and asked for them to name the top assistant coaches in their respective league. Soucie ranked No. 2 on the list, while Johnston was slotted at No. 4.
Soucie has been with Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay every step of the way since 1996 when McKay was hired at Portland State. Since returning to Liberty in 2015, Soucie has been a part of 115 Flames wins, which ranks No. 2 in the state of Virginia during that span.
"Coach McKay's right-hand man. Touches every phase of the program. Extension of McKay's voice," an ASUN assistant told Goodman.
Entering his third season at Liberty, Johnston has been recognized as one of the best minds in college basketball, as the Flames ranked No. 1 in the nation in fewest turnovers per game this past season.
"Helped tweak offensive schemes that made Liberty more versatile and harder to guard. Behind-the-scenes grinder in recruiting," an ASUN assistant told Goodman.
Liberty has proved to be one of the best mid-major programs in the country, winning 59 games over the past two seasons, which ranks No. 2 in the country behind only Gonzaga (64 wins). The Flames are coming off back-to-back seasons of being crowned ASUN Champions.
