Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award

As part of its wrap-up coverage of the 2019-20 athletics season, will run a series of interviews with the nominees for the 2020 Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award.

In 1975, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the top senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the standards and lives of both of these great Christian men.  Rock Royer was Liberty's first football coach in 1973.  Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty's basketball team from 1972 until 1975.  Both Rock Royer and Mac Rivera tragically died at a young age.

This award encompasses more than just athletic ability.  It recognizes the Liberty University senior student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom and among the student body.

Today, we continue this series by talking with Ben Highfill, a senior member of the Liberty baseball team from Apex, N.C.

Known for his steady glove in his four season at Liberty, Highfill proved a versatile defender, seeing action at all four infield positions during his career. The infielder finished his career with a .966 fielding percentage.

This spring, Highfill started all 17 games at third base, leading Liberty with a .317 batting average. He also led the Flames in hits (19), home runs (3), RBI (12) and slugging percentage (.600).

Highfill help stabilize the Liberty lineup when he took over the designated hitter role in mid-April during Flames run to the 2019 ASUN Championship. Highfill helped stabilize the bottom of the batting order by hitting .263 with 15 RBI and 15 runs scored over the final 23 games of the regular season. He also posted a .366 on base percentage.

Highfill graduated this past May with a master's degree in business administration. He earned a bachelor's degree in marketing in May of 2019.

Highfill was a member of the ASUN Honor Roll in 2019 and the Big South Presidential Honor Roll in 2017 and 2018. He took part in several community service projects including the baseball team's trip to the Dominican Republic in the fall of 2019. Highfill also took part in other projects such as Dollar Makes a Difference, Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat, and the Spooktacular.

The winner of the 2020 Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award will be announced on on Friday, June 12.
