Payton Keiner was named the third CSCAA All-American in program history.
Official CSCAA Release Liberty junior Payton Keiner has been named an All-American by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
The CSCAA awarded All-America honors to all athletes who were selected to compete in the 2020 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, which were cancelled due to COVID-19.
"Despite the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, Coach Shellenberger did a remarkable job this season," explained Greg Earhart, Executive Director of the CSCAA. "Payton had the rug pulled out from her this season, so we are excited to recognize her as one of the nation's best."
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Keiner becomes the third All-American in program history. She joins Brye Ravettine (13th place in 50 free in 2012) and Jess Reinhardt (10th in in 100 fly in 2014), where were both named CSCAA All-America honorable mention recipients.
Keiner was slated to make her second appearance at the NCAA Championships, as she competed in the 100 and 200 backstroke at nationals as a freshman in 2018. Keiner joins Alicia Finnigan (2017-18) and Jess Reinhardt (2013-14) as the only two Lady Flames to date to be selected to compete in multiple NCAA Championships.
Keiner was scheduled to compete in the 100 backstroke on March 20, followed by the 200 backstroke the following night. She solidified her spot at nationals with a conference-, meet- and program-record 200 backstroke time of 1:52.63 which she clocked while winning the A Final at the CCSA Championships. That time was ranked 19th in the nation this season. Keiner also posted a B cut in the 100 backstroke (program-record 52.60) in her A Final victory at the CCSA meet, a time which is the 42nd fastest in the event in 2019-20.
At the 2020 CCSA Championships, Keiner won both the 100 and 200 backstroke for the second year in a row. She is tied for the program record with five individual event victories all-time at CCSA Championships.
Keiner is the program record holder in the 50 back (24.82), 100 back (52.60) and 200 back (1:52.63), all set at the 2020 CCSA Championships.
