After a three-week long Liberty Flames Athletics Top Plays Bracket Challenge, a champion has been crowned. The Liberty women's lacrosse team and Anna Keebler's play have won the bracket challenge.
Keebler's play, a steal and score against Winthrop on Feb. 26 at the Liberty Lacrosse Field, defeated men's basketball's Darius McGhee's dunk versus Lipscomb in the ASUN title game in the bracket challenge final, Monday. Keebler also defeated football's Antonio Gandy-Golden catch against Rutgers in the Final Four, Saturday.
"Thank you to all who followed along and participated in voting for the Liberty women's lacrosse play in the play of the year bracket challenge for the past few weeks," Keebler said. "It was so cool to see all the support and followers our team has to be able to pull through and receive all those votes to win!"
Keebler's play came early in the second half as the Lady Flames had scored six unanswered goals to open up a 12-5 lead over the Winthrop Eagles. Following a save from Eagles goalkeeper Kelsey Johnson, Keebler checked the ball away from defender Rachel Miller, scooped up the loose ball and dashed towards the goal cage. The Liberty junior finished off the play, ripping a shot into the top of the cage for her 19th goal of the year. The goal, the Lady Flames' seventh unanswered goal at the time, made it 13-5 Lady Flames in an eventual 17-9 triumph over the Eagles.
"This has been a fun way for us to interact with the fans and keep the girls engaged in a competition," stated Liberty Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Kelly Nangle. "This play really sums up who we are as a team, so it has been awesome to see it win. Now we have to get to work to create more great plays so we can defend our title next year!"
The top plays bracket challenge featured the top 32 plays in Liberty Athletics from the 2019-20 season and was voted on by fans on Liberty Athletics Twitter social media feeds. The tournament featured four eight-play regions: Coca-Cola, Foster Fuels, Runk & Pratt and Carter Bank & Trust.
