Liberty will continue its stretch of matches against opponents from the state of Virginia this weekend when it heads on the road to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs and William & Mary Tribe.

The Flames will take on the Monarchs (6-1), Friday evening at 6 p.m. at the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.. Liberty holds a 4-2 record and is coming off its first-ever win over an ACC team. The Flames defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 4-3 on the road, Sunday.

Meanwhile, ODU has won three straight, with its most recent victory coming at home over Nebraska last Sunday by a 5-0 score.

Liberty will then head to Williamsburg, Va., to square off with unbeaten William & Mary (3-0). First serve is pegged for 11 a.m. on Sunday at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe are coming off a 7-0 home sweep of Longwood, last Sunday.

The Flames are in search of their first victory over ODU. The Monarchs hold a 9-0 edge in the all-time series, but the two teams have not met since 2011. ODU topped Liberty 6-1 in that match (Feb. 18, 2011).

Liberty earned its first-ever victory over William & Mary a season ago. The Flames, who had been 0-7 all-time against the Tribe previously, defeated the Tribe 6-1 on Feb. 16, 2019 at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg.

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty sophomore Josh Wilson earned ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Week recognition, Wednesday by the conference office. The Reigate, United Kingdom native clinched the Flames' first-ever win over Virginia Tech, Sunday, when he won in comeback fashion over the Hokies' Alex Ribeiro (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) at No. 2 singles.
  • With a singles victory last Friday versus VCU, senior Chase Burton moved into a tie for first place in program history for career singles triumphs with 74. Burton shares the top spot with Egon Samaai (2012-16) and Siim Tuus (2009-13) and needs one victory to establish a new program record.
  • Flames freshman Rafael Marques Da Silva, who joined the team at the semester break, is 5-1 in spring singles matches. The native of Brazil is 4-1 in the No. 5 slot in the lineup and 1-0 in the No. 2 position.
  • This is Liberty's best six-match start (4-2) to a season since the 2015 squad also began the season by winning four of its first six matches.
  • The Flames are a combined 23-13 (.639) in singles and 10-7 (.588) in doubles through six matches.
