Wilson has been named the ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Week for a second time in his career.
After his clutch performance in Sunday's win at Virginia Tech, Flames men's tennis sophomore Josh Wilson has been named the ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.
"Josh loves the game and is making big improvements with his fitness and mental toughness. He is growing into a great leader for our team," stated Liberty Men's Tennis Head Coach Derek Schwandt.
With Liberty and Virginia Tech tied 3-3 on Sunday in Blacksburg, Wilson earned a comeback three-set win over Alex Ribeiro on court two, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to secure Liberty's first-ever win over the Hokies by a 4-3 score. Wilson led the third set 5-4, 40-30 while on serve. The sophomore served his way to victory, as Ribeiro's returned sailed long.
The victory was also the Flames' first-ever triumph over an ACC school. Wilson, last year's ASUN Freshman of the Year, improved to 3-2 in the No. 2 singles slot, this spring.
The Reigate, United Kingdom, native has now been honored as the ASUN Player of the Week twice in his career. He earned the distinction for the first time last season on Jan. 30, 2019. The Flames lead the ASUN with two player of the week recipients in 2020, as freshman Goncalo Ferreira received the same honor on Jan. 29.
Wilson and Liberty (4-2) will head on the road to take on Commonwealth foes Old Dominion (Friday, 6 p.m.) and William & Mary (Sunday, 11 a.m.) over the weekend.
