The Flames men's tennis team will host in-state foe Longwood, Friday afternoon at Crosswhite Athletic Club. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Liberty (2-1) is on a two-match winning streak after opening its home slate last Sunday with a pair of victories over Gardner-Webb and North Carolina A&T. The Flames swept the Runnin' Bulldogs 7-0 in an afternoon match, followed by a 6-1 decision over the Aggies.

Longwood (0-0) will be playing its season opener against Liberty on Friday. The Lancers finished the 2019 campaign with a 13-9 overall mark and 3-4 record in Big South matches.

Liberty and Longwood were former Big South rivals, last meeting in 2018. The Flames hold a 19-6 advantage in the all-time series. In 2018, the two teams split a pair of matches. Liberty won the regular season match by a 5-2 score in Farmville, Va., before the Lancers topped the Flames 4-3 in the Big South Championship quarterfinals (April 16, 2018).

Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty freshman Goncalo Ferreira was named ASUN Player of the Week by the conference office, Wednesday afternoon. The Flames rookie posted a 2-0 singles record and 1-0 mark in doubles last weekend. It was the first career player of the week accolade for Ferreira.
  • The Flames have now won eight straight home matches, a streak that began during the 2019 campaign. During that stretch, Liberty is 4-0 at Crosswhite Athletic Club, 3-0 at the Cook Tennis Center and 1-0 at Boonsboro Country Club.
  • Liberty went unbeaten (6-0) at home in 2019. The Flames have not lost a home match since April 8, 2018 (4-3 loss to Winthrop).
  • The Flames will play 11 home regular season matches in 2020.
  • The Flames were picked to finish second in the ASUN Conference behind defending champion FGCU in the ASUN Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches Poll. Lipscomb (3-0), Liberty (2-1) and Stetson (2-1) have been the best ASUN squads in non-conference play so far this spring.
  • Senior Chase Burton is approaching the program record for career singles victories. The Naples, Fla., native has 72 career singles wins and needs three more to surpass Egon Samaai (74 wins, 2012-16) and Siim Tuus (74 wins, 2009-13) as the program's all-time leader.
  • In November, Liberty Athletics announced plans to construct an indoor tennis facility on campus. The 75,000-square foot facility is expected to open in January 2021 and will feature six indoor courts.
