Thoughts From Head Coach Jeff Maren "This was an incredible start. The girls really bought into what we did the last two weeks in practice in just really trying to be focused and disciplined. We had great composure. This (Miami) was a very upperclassmen type of team that we played against, and we played more like the upperclassmen today."
How It Happened • The Lady Flames won two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, with court one proving to be the deciding match. In that match, the Liberty freshmen duo of Tiffany Nguyen and Micaela Ode Mitre beat the RedHawks' Laura Rico and Melati Devi in a tiebreaker 7-6 (1). • Miami's Brindtha Ramasamy and Lena Babunski got the RedHawks off to a promising start in doubles with a 6-4 triumph over Liberty's Grace Hashiguchi and Esther Lovato in the No. 3 doubles match. However, the Lady Flames' Kalani Soli and Eloise Saraty evened up the doubles session with a 7-5 decision over Milana Lysova and Makenzie Myers on court two. • Nguyen and Ode Mitre, both appearing in their first career dual match, are now 7-3 overall in doubles during the 2019-20 campaign. • Liberty claimed all but one singles match, winning on courts one, two, three, four and five. • The Lady Flames' Soli made it 2-0 after defeating Ramasamy 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. The RedHawks' only point of the day came as Priyana Kalita knocked off Liberty's Saraty in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) on court six. • The Lady Flames' Ode Mitre upended Miami's Myers 6-2, 6-2 on court five. The deciding fourth point came from Liberty's Lovato, who topped Lysova in the No. 3 singles contest to clinch the match and push the Liberty advantage to 4-1. Lovato's victory her team-best 10th of the season. • Liberty's Nguyen (No. 4 singles) and sophomore Alexandra Almborg (No. 2 singles) punctuated the win with straight-sets victories over their counterparts. Nguyen bested Devi 6-3, 6-2, and Almborg edged Rico 7-5, 6-4. • The Lady Flames, now in their 20th year of competition, are 8-12 all-time in spring season openers.
Next Up • The Lady Flames are back in action on Saturday morning against the MTSU Red Raiders (0-0). First serve is set for 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. • The two programs are squaring off for the first time in women's tennis. Liberty will be looking to improve to 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2017.
