Game Day Central: Virginia

Game Note vs. Virginia

Liberty (6-4) will wrap up its four-game road swing with a short jaunt north on Route 29 to face ACC Coastal Division leader Virginia (7-3, 5-2 ACC). Playing at Scott Stadium for the second straight season, the Flames are in search of their first-ever victory over an ACC opponent.

"4 Downs" with the Cavaliers

1. Liberty needs one victory in its two remaining games to achieve bowl eligibility for the first time. Meanwhile, Virginia is bowl eligible for the third consecutive season and is poised to make its 21st bowl game appearance in program history. The Flames are in search of their first-ever victory over an ACC foe. Their closest ACC contest to date was a 20-17 loss at Wake Forest on Sept. 1, 2012.
2. Liberty will play at Scott Stadium for the second straight season on Saturday. This is the third venue the Flames have visited in both 2018 and 2019, along with New Mexico State's Aggie Memorial Stadium and UMass' McGuirk Alumni Stadium. In both previous cases, the Flames were victorious this season after losing at the same stadium the previous year. Liberty is not scheduled to return to Scott Stadium until Oct. 14, 2023.
3. Virginia's Joe Reed ranks No. 3 nationally this season with 743 total kickoff return yards. He is averaging 35.4 yards per return and has taken a pair of kickoff returns for TDs. Liberty ranks No. 9 in the nation for kickoff return defense (17.1 yards per return) and has not allowed a single kickoff return of 30+ yards in 2019.
4. The Flames' Stephen Calvert (No. 9 nationally in passing yards) and Antonio Gandy-Golden (No. 2 nationally in receiving yards) are one of four FBS QB/WR duos who both rank among the nation's top 10 this season. They will be tested by a Virginia defense which ranks No. 23 in the nation with 193.5 passing yards allowed per game and limited the Flames to 149 yards through the air last season.
