Joseph Emerson won a pair of singles matches on Saturday at the Flames Invitational.
The Liberty men's tennis team posted a 15-3 mark on day two of the Flames Invitational on Saturday at the Cook Tennis Center.
Through two days, the Flames have won a combined 27 matches, including 23 singles matches and four doubles bouts. Saturday featured two singles sessions.
Six Liberty players won two matches on the day, including: Nicaise Muamba, Josh Wilson, Chase Burton, Steve Mundt, William Barker and Joseph Emerson.
Muamba won his first match in comeback fashion, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) over Virginia's Jefferson Docker. In his second match, the Flames junior topped Gavin Segraves of Navy in straight sets (7-5, 6-0) to improve to 3-0 in singles on the weekend. Meanwhile, Wilson also was victorious in comeback fashion in his first match, taking down Appalachian State's Aleksandar Petrovic 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). The Flames sophomore then took down James Madison's Damon Roberts in two sets (6-2, 6-1) in his afternoon match to move to 3-0 at the tournament.
Burton earned two set-straights victories on Saturday to improve to 3-0 at the Flames Invitational. The Liberty senior knocked off Campbell Stone of Appalachian State 6-0, 6-4 and then defeated Navy's Matt Lee 6-2, 6-0 in his afternoon contest. Burton's win over Lee was the 70th of his Flames career.
Mundt's two victories came against Longwood's Ignacio Sandoval (1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3)) and versus his teammate Deji Thomas-Smith (6-4, 6-2). Barker is unbeaten (3-0) in singles this weekend following a pair of two-set wins (6-4, 6-4 over Rosen Naydenov of Longwood and 6-2, 6-2 over Josh Raymundo of James Madison).
Emerson's two triumphs on Saturday came over Jerome Romualdez (Virginia) by a 6-1, 6-4 score and Marc Cassasnovas (Longwood) by a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) score. The Liberty freshman is 3-0 in singles matches, this weekend.
The Flames' Thomas-Smith, Goncalo Ferreira and Ian Sturgill each collected one victory on the second day of competition. Thomas-Smith's victory came over Karan Srivastava of Appalchian State, 6-1, 6-0. Ferreira got past Navy's Jan Kjelberg in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4). Sturgill's victory came against Longwood's Ernest Rocabert (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)). Thomas-Smith, Ferreira and Sturgill are each 2-1 in singles, this weekend.
The third and final day of the Flames Invitational on Sunday will feature one round of doubles, followed by a final round of singles. The action will begin at 10 a.m. at the Cook Tennis Center.
