Senior midfielder Ruben Garcia has been named the 2019 ASUN Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Liberty Flames midfielder Ruben Garcia has been selected as the 2019 ASUN Conference's Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as the conference's men's soccer awards were announced this evening. The conference's scholar-athlete is voted upon by the conference's men's soccer sports information directors and academic advisors from each school. In addition, midfielder Seth Clark was named to the ASUN All-Freshmen team.
Garcia, a senior, holds a 4.0 GPA in interdisciplinary studies. The Madrid, Spain native also earned inclusion on the ASUN All-Academic team for the second straight season. He is one of three Flames to start every game this season and has started 40 consecutive games over the last three years.
In addition, Garcia has been selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 team. The team consists of players from North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Last year, Garcia was also named to the 2018-19 VaSID All-State Academic team and earned inclusion on the ASUN Honor Roll.
In his first season at Liberty, Clark has started all 17 Flames contests. The Darfield, New Zealand native enters the week, leading the Flames in points with five and assists with three. He also has scored one goal this season, the game-winning tally in a 2-1 victory over Duquesne on Oct. 1.
Liberty, 5-12 and the No. 6 seed for the ASUN Men's Soccer Championship, faces No. 3 seed North Florida in the ASUN Quarterfinals at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. on Friday. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. The winner advances to play host and No. 2 seed FGCU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
