Flames in 4th Place after Day 1 of Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational

A solid back-nine effort allowed No. 37 Liberty to move up the leaderboard, Friday afternoon, putting the Flames in fourth place after round one of the 2019 Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational.

The Flames find themselves four shots off the overall lead after firing a 12-under par 272 today at the Ka'anapali Golf Course; Royal Ka'anapali Course (par 71, 6,700 yards).

Leading the way for Liberty are Jonathan Yaun and Connor Polender, who both carded a 4-under par 67 and are tied for 12th place.

The 20-team field will return to the Ka'anapali Golf Course; Royal Ka'anapali Course, Saturday morning, at 8:30 a.m. HST for a shotgun start to round two.

Round Recap – Liberty's Starting Five:
• Jonathan Yaun: T12 4-under par 67 (67)
• Connor Polender: T12 4-under par 67 (67)
• Alexandre Fuchs: T23 3-under par 68 (68)
• Zach Barbin: T47 1-under par 70 (70)
• Ervin Chang: T80 2-over par 73 (73)

Field Reflections:
• Fourteen of the 20 teams in the field finished the day with an under-par team score, with the course playing at a stroke average of 71.08.
• No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 44 Kansas bested the field on Friday, with both teams carding a 16-under par 268.
• No. 23 UCLA is one shot off the lead and three strokes ahead of the Flames following a 15-under par 269.
• The Flames are currently ahead of three top-25 ranked teams following round one of the three-day tournament (No. 18 Washington/10-under par 274; No. 15 Clemson/9-under par 275; No. 19 Georgia/7-under par 277).
• A total of 56 individuals in the 119-man field posted a score in red figures, including four of Liberty's five starters.
• Oklahoma's Garett Reband, the No. 5 ranked golfer in the country, and Kansas' Andy Spencer lead the field after carding a 7-under par 64.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes:
• The Flames finished the first round ranked third in the field in par-4 scoring (3.93 scoring average/4-under par) and par-5 scoring (4.27 scoring average/11-under par).
• The Flames finished the day with their second-lowest 18-hole total of the 2019-20 season (Liberty carded a 271 during the second round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 21).
• Yaun, who claimed medalist honors at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, posted his third-consecutive sub-70 round (65-67-67). He birdied three of his last four holes, Friday.
• Polender made the most of his first career start for the Flames, carding a career-low round of 67 that included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 9 hole (485 yards).
• Alexandre Fuchs (3-under par 68) and Zach Barbin (1-under par 70) carded a combined nine birdies during the first round of the tournament.
