Ferreira won his first qualifying match on Sunday in Naples.
Flames men's tennis players Goncalo Ferreira and Nicaise Muamba were both victorious in qualifying on day one of the Naples 25k ITF Futures tournament at Academia Sanchez-Casal Florida.
Ferreira squared off with former Tennessee Volunteer Preston Touliatos and emerged victorious in two sets (6-3, 7-5). Touliatos was a two-time ITA All-American in doubles who won 74 singles matches and 81 doubles contests during his tenure with the Volunteers.
Ferreira's victory was the fifth of the fall for the freshman. He will advance to face Giles Hussey, a graduate student at Tennessee, in tomorrow's next round of qualifying at 10 a.m.
Muamba took the court following Ferreira's triumph, and he wasted no time in defeating Joel Vincent Link of Germany 6-1, 6-0. The Liberty junior's eighth victory of the season sends him to the next round of qualifying, where he will face Mehdi Laalej (Morocco), a recent graduate of Florida Atlantic. Muamba and Laalej will square off at noon, Monday.
The second round and third rounds of qualifying will take place on Monday and Tuesday, with main draw singles matches starting on Wednesday. Players must win three singles contests in qualifying to reach the main draw.
