Yaun Claims Medalist Honors at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate

Liberty's Jonathan Yaun backed up a career round yesterday with a 4-under par 67 on Tuesday to finish in a four-way tie for first place at the 2019 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.

After carding a 6-under par 65 during the afternoon flight on Monday, Yaun continued his solid play during today's final round on the Royal Oaks Country Club (par 71, 7,068 yards).

Yaun finished the event with an 8-under par 205 (73-65-67), the lowest 54-hole total of the sophomore's collegiate career.

As a team, the Flames finished the tournament in third place with a 12-under par 840 (286-271-283), Liberty's lowest 54-hole team total of the 2019-20 season.

• Jonathan Yaun: T1 8-over par 205 (73-65-67)
• Ervin Chang: T10 4-under par 209 (68-68-73)
• Zach Barbin: T16 1-under par 212 (72-70-70)

Field Reflections:

• The Royal Oaks Intercollegiate utilizing the "Maxwell" tournament format where all five golfers from each school participated in the same grouping.
• No. 6 SMU continued to pace the way in the 12-team field, carding a 15-under par 269 on Tuesday to win the tournament by nine strokes.
• The Mustangs posted a winning score of 27-under par 825 (282-274-269).
• Tournament host and No. 11 ranked Baylor finished four shots ahead of the Flames with a 16-under par 836 (282-280-274).
• Liberty finished eight shots clear of fourth-place Michigan's 4-under par 848 (280-288-280).
• Yaun shared medalist honors with SMU's Ollie Osborne (69-71-65), Michigan's Charlie Pilon (67-69-69) and SMU's Mac Meissner (70-67-68), who also posted a winning score of 8-under par 205.
• The Flames continued to do most of their scoring on the par-5 holes, finishing the tournament second in the field with a 4.64 par-5 scoring average (16-under par).
• A total of 18 players in 68-man field finished the event, including three Liberty players.

Birdies and Bogeys – Liberty Team Notes:

• Liberty is ranked No. 53 in the first Golfstat national rankings of the 2019-20 season, which was released, last Wednesday.
• Yaun doubled his career sub-70 rounds during this event, coming into the tournament with two rounds below 70 in 46 previous rounds of collegiate competition.
• Liberty's Ervin Chang (14), Yaun (13) and Zach Barbin (11) finished the tournament with a combined 38 birdies.
• Chang, who shared the clubhouse lead after round two, finished the event tied for 10th place with a 4-under par 209 (68-68-73).
• Barbin posted his first collegiate sub-par tournament total, finishing tied for 16th place with a 1-under par 212 (72-70-70).
