The Liberty Flames doubles pairing of Nicaise Muamba and Deji Thomas-Smith finished runner-up in the doubles main draw on the fifth and final day of the ITA Atlantic Regional, Monday at Snyder Courts.
Muamba and Deji Thomas-Smith (No. 14 seed) fell 6-4, 6-2 the 47th-ranked duo in the nation, Francois Musitelli and Jannik Giesse of Old Dominion on Monday afternoon in the doubles final. The Flames pairing posted a 5-1 doubles record at the event in what were their first-ever competitive matches as a duo.
Muamba and Thomas-Smith are only the second tandem in program history to ever play in the doubles final of the ITA Atlantic Regional. In 2013, Liberty's Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero won the doubles main draw at Virginia Tech.
Muamba, the No. 1 seed in the singles main draw, lost in the semifinals to No. 4 seed Ryan Goetz of Virginia by a 6-2, 6-3 score in the morning. The Liberty junior wraps up his time at the regional with a 4-1 mark. The Laval, Quebec, Canada, native is 7-5 in fall singles bouts while facing strong competition.
The Flames won 14 singles matches and seven doubles matches at the five-day regional, which was hosted by Virginia.
Liberty's next event on the schedule is the Charlottesville 54k ATP Challenger, Oct. 28-Nov. 3. Muamba will compete at that event. The next team tournament will be the Flames Invitational, Nov. 8-10 at the Cook Tennis Center.
