The 17th-ranked Liberty Lady Flames field hockey team will play a pair of road games this weekend against Georgetown and No. 1 North Carolina.

On Friday, Liberty (8-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) will head to the nation's capital for a BIG EAST showdown against the Georgetown Hoyas (5-10, 1-3 BIG EAST). Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field in Washington, D.C.

Sunday's game pits the Lady Flames against the top-ranked, unbeaten and defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels (12-0, 4-0 ACC). The contest will begin at 1 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Lady Flames split a pair of games last weekend against in-state foes No. 22 Old Dominion and Longwood. ODU topped Liberty 3-2 on Friday in Lynchburg. The Lady Flames bounced back with a 3-0 road win at Longwood on Sunday.

      Georgetown will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. Their most recent setback came at Saint Francis (Pa.) by a 2-1 score, Tuesday afternoon. UNC has won 35 consecutive games, dating back to the 2018 season. The Tar Heels' last loss was in the Final Four of the 2017 Division I Field Hockey Championship.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • The Lady Flames are a perfect 6-0 all-time against Georgetown, including 3-0 in BIG EAST play. In 2018, Liberty topped Georgetown 2-1 at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
  • Conversely, Liberty is looking for its first win against North Carolina in what will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs.
  • Lady Flames senior defender Mallory Fortenbaugh garnered inclusion on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday afternoon. The Millerstown, Pa., native scored a career-best two goals in Liberty's 3-0 shutout win at Longwood, last Sunday. Fortenbaugh and the Lady Flames defensive unit have five shutouts on the season.
  • Liberty ranks No. 3 in the country in scoring margin (2.43), No. 5 in goals-against-average (0.90), No. 6 in goals per game (3.36), points per game (9.45), scoring average (3.33) and shutouts per game (0.45) and No. 7 in assists per game (2.73).
  • Senior goalkeeper Allison Schaefer is fifth in the nation in goals-against-average. Freshman forward Daniella Rhodes is No. 11 in the country in points per game (2.27), No. 17 in goals per game (0.82) and No. 18 in assists per game (0.64).
  • The Lady Flames are 20th in the NCAA Field Hockey RPI. The Tar Heels are No. 1 in the RPI, while Georgetown is No. 59.
  • Liberty was picked to finish second in the BIG EAST, while Georgetown was slotted to finish eighth. UNC was picked to win the ACC in the preseason coaches' poll.
  • In Liberty's eight victories this season, the Lady Flames have outscored their opponents 34-4. Liberty is 0-3 against ranked opponents in 2019, losing each game by one goal.
