After an impressive showing at Friday's Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, the Liberty women's cross country team has climbed to No. 9 in the Southeast Region, matching its best-ever regional ranking. Meanwhile, the men's cross country squad remains in the region's No. 13 spot, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Lady Flames, who moved up three spots from last week's regional poll, were previously ranked No. 9 in the Southeast during the 2007, 2008 and 2012 seasons.
Liberty earned its lofty ranking by finishing fifth of 15 teams at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational to equal its best-ever team placement at the meet. Led by freshman Adelyn Ackley's seventh-place individual finish, the Lady Flames defeated host Virginia and Florida (currently ranked No. 5 in the South Region), among others.
The men's squad came in seventh of 16 teams at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, defeating William & Mary, who was previously ranked ahead of the Flames. Redshirt sophomore Felix Kandie raced to a third-place finish on Friday, marking Liberty's best-ever individual performance at the event.
Liberty will only compete once during the month of October. The Flames and Lady Flames will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 19. The meet will be contested at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the 2019 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
