The Liberty women's tennis squad picked up six victories on the first day of competition at the William & Mary ITA Hall of Fame Classic on Friday. The three-day tournament is being held at both the Millie West Tennis Facility and McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

Liberty posted an above .500 mark (5-4) in singles and also claimed one doubles match.

"This was a good first day of competition for our team. We learned a lot about what helps us to play our best, both individually and as a family," stated Liberty Women's Tennis Head Coach Jeff Maren. "We took baby steps forward today, and I am so excited about continuing our growth tomorrow!"

Four Lady Flames newcomers won in their respective Liberty debuts: Eloise Saraty, Tiffany Nguyen, Caisey Lee Emery and Esther Lovato. Sophomore Alexandra Almborg was also victorious on day one.

Saraty battled past VCU's Noumea Witmus in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6), and Nguyen topped VCU's Paula Onita in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9)), as well.

Emery won for the first time in a Liberty uniform when she knocked off Penn State's Shannon Haley 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). Lovato defeated the Nittany Lions' Sydney Weinberg in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0.

Almborg's triumph came over the VCU Rams' Melissa Ifidzhen in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Almborg teamed up with freshman Micaela Ode Mitre in doubles to get past Chloe Hamlin and Zoe Kulkarni of Maryland by an 8-4 score.

Day two of the tournament will get started at 9 a.m. with a doubles session, followed by singles sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Lady Flames will face units from Old Dominion and VCU in doubles. Liberty players will take on opponents from Maryland and West Virginia in singles matches.
