Muamba lost a tight match to Fucile on Thursday at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters event.
Liberty Flames junior Nicaise Muamba lost his singles main draw round of 32 match to the Grand Canyon Antelopes' Lorenzo Fucile on day one of the Oracle ITA Masters, Thursday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Muamba, the 65th-ranked singles player in the nation, dropped a pair of tough tiebreaker sets, falling 7-6 (1), 7-6 (7) to Fucile. The match was evenly contested throughout, with No. 17 seed Fucile winning 80 total points, compared to 78 total points for No. 16 seed Muamba.
The two competitors were also close in first serve points won (64 percent to 63 percent in favor of Fucile), first return points won (37 percent to 36 percent in favor of Fucile) and second serve points won (55 percent to 47 percent in favor of Muamba).
Muamba will square off with Alabama State's Alexis Collard in a backdraw match, Friday. Collard lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to No. 1 seed and 20th-ranked Keegan Smith of UCLA on Thursday.
In doubles, Muamba and Lady Flames senior Kalani Soli lost their first round match in a tiebreaker (7-6 (3)) to to Aditya Vashistha and Jessica Livianu of St. John's. That match was also contested at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Malibu Racquet Club is the other host location for the tournament.
The Oracle ITA Masters will resume on Friday morning for day two of competition. The tournament central page will feature updated draws and start times on Thursday evening.
