Burton picked up his 64th career singles victory, Sunday.
Liberty men's tennis players Ian Sturgill and Chase Burton each won their respective singles matches on day three of the Duke James Bonk Invite, Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.
The Flames won nine singles contests and two doubles matches over the course of the three-day invite.
Sturgill earned his second straight-sets victory of the weekend when he defeated UNCW's Bruno Caula 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday. Sturgill owns a 5-3 singles mark, so far this fall.
"Ian competed hard and finished strong," stated Flames head coach Derek Schwandt.
Burton brought his singles record to an even 2-2 at the invite with a come-from-behind triumph (1-6, 7-5, 7-5) against Gardner-Webb's Ross Gilbert. The victory was Burton's 64th career triumph, moving him into seventh place all-time in program history for singles victories.
The Naples, Fla., native needs 11 more victories to become the program's all-time leader. The current record is held by Egon Samaai (74 victories, 2012-16) and Siim Tuus (74 victories, 2009-13).
Liberty's next team tournament will the Richmond Invitational, Oct. 11-13. Flames junior Nicaise Muamba will compete at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., beginning Thursday. The event will be held at Malibu Racquet Club and at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Full tournament information can be found here.
