For the second consecutive week to begin the 2019 season, Liberty's duo of freshman Adelyn Ackley and redshirt sophomore Felix Kandie collected ASUN Conference honors. Ackley again swept the ASUN Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards, while Kandie was recognized as ASUN Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, along with North Alabama's Peyton Ewoldt.
Ackley covered the FGCU Invitational women's 5K course in 17:42.27 on Saturday, giving the Mears, Mich., native a 57-second victory over teammate Calli Parlier. Ackley, who has now won each of her first two collegiate races by an average of 62.5 seconds, led a 1-2-3-4 Liberty sweep atop the individual standings. As a result, the Lady Flames scored a near-perfect 16 points to claim the team championship.
Kandie also made it two consecutive first-place finishes to open the season with an 8K time of 26:41.89 in Saturday's men's race. He was followed closely by teammates Ryan Drew (second place) and Joe Spitzer (third place), as the Flames rolled to a 25-42 triumph over Stetson for the FGCU Invitational men's team title.
A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kandie becomes Liberty's sixth ASUN Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week in eight weeks since joining the conference a year ago.
Next up, Liberty will split up its runners between two different meets on Sept. 27, beginning with the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in Earlysville, Va. The event will preview the course for the 2019 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.
Other Liberty runners will compete in that day's Queen City Invite at the lightning-fast McAlpine Creek Park course in Charlotte, N.C.
