After sweeping the women's and men's individual titles at Friday's season-opening Liberty Challenge, Liberty freshman Adelyn Ackley and redshirt sophomore Felix Kandie have each earned ASUN Conference weekly honors. Ackley was named both ASUN Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week and the conference's first-ever Women's Freshman of the Week. Meanwhile, Kandie was tabbed ASUN Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. A native of Mears, Mich., Ackley is the first freshman to be named ASUN Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week since Jacksonville's Jana Reinert on Oct. 11, 2017. She won the award by becoming the Lady Flames' first freshman to finish first in her collegiate cross country debut since Ednah Kurgat did so at the 2015 UVA Duals.
Ackley covered the hilly 4K course in 14:08 to win in dominating fashion. She crossed the line 68 seconds ahead of runner-up Brittany Carnathan, leading a 1-2-3-4 Liberty finish in the women's race.
Kandie becomes Liberty's fifth ASUN Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week in seven weeks since joining the conference a year ago. The Eldoret, Kenya native's first runner of the week honor came as a result of his first collegiate cross country victory.
Kandie clocked a 4K time of 12:10, outdistancing runner-up Derek Johnson of Virginia by 19 seconds. In the process, the 2019 track & field All-American notched his fifth top-10 finish in nine career cross country races.
Both Ackley and Kandie are entered in Saturday's FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla. The men's 8K will begin at 8 a.m. with the women's 5K to follow at 9 a.m. at the Buckingham Course which will play host to the 2019 ASUN Cross Country Championships.
