Men's Tennis Spring Recap/Summer Update With Derek Schwandt

LFSN's Nick Pierce had the opportunity to catch up with Flames men's tennis head coach Derek Schwandt to recap the spring season, discuss the summer months and look ahead to the fall.

Liberty posted a 12-11 overall record and 6-1 mark in the ASUN in its first year in the conference.

Spring 2019 Highlights

  • Liberty earned the No. 2 seed for the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship. The Flames started 5-0 in conference action for the first time in program history.
  • The Flames were a perfect 6-0 on their home courts at the Cook Tennis Center.
  • Liberty played a challenging non-conference schedule with strong opponents Penn, Princeton, Washington, Santa Clara, William & Mary, Virginia Tech, Elon, VCU, Richmond and Arizona.
  • The Flames collected three 7-0 sweeps and a pair of 6-1 victories during the spring.


  • Nicaise Muamba – ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Year, NCAA Singles Championship participant, ASUN All-Conference first team, VaSID All-State singles first team, nationally ranked in singles seven times and once in doubles, four-time ASUN Player of the Week, No. 9-ranked singles player and 10th-ranked doubles unit (with Chase Burton) in Atlantic Region
  • Josh Wilson – ASUN Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year, ASUN All-Conference first team, VaSID All-State singles first team, ITA Scholar-Athlete, ASUN Player of the Week, No. 17-ranked singles player in Atlantic Region
  • Chase Burton – ASUN Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, 10th-ranked doubles unit (with Nicaise Muamba) in Atlantic Region, 60 singles wins in three years (10th most in program history)
  • Eddie Gutierrez – ASUN Spring Winners for Life Team honoree, No. 3 play on SportsCenter on April 6 against North Florida, ASUN Player of the Week, 70 career singles victories (No. 6 in program history)
