Muamba, Wilson and Burton each received recognition on the VaSID University Division Men's Tennis All-State teams.
Liberty men's tennis players Nicaise Muamba, Josh Wilson and Chase Burton each received recognition on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Men's Tennis All-State teams, as announced by the organization on Thursday.
Muamba and Wilson were two of six players in the state of Virginia to be honored on the VaSID All-State singles first team. The Flames and No. 5 Virginia led the way with two players on the first team. This is the first time Liberty has ever had two singles players listed on the all-state team in the same year. Muamba and Wilson are the third and fourth all-state singles players in program history.
Muamba and his doubles partner, Chase Burton, were honored on the VaSID All-State doubles second team. The duo is the first Liberty pairing since 2016 (Sam Matheson and Egon Samaai) to be recognized on the listing and the third all-state doubles tandem in school history. Muamba is the second player in Flames tennis history to make the all-state team in both doubles and singles, joining Sam Matheson (2016).
Muamba and Wilson are both being recognized on VaSID All-State teams for the first time in their respective careers. This is the second time Burton has been honored at the state level. In 2017, he became the first Flames freshman to be named to the VaSID All-State singles team.
Muamba earned ASUN Men's Tennis Player of the Year recognition and also competed at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship. The Laval, Quebec, Canada, native also received ASUN All-Conference first team recognition, collected four ASUN Player of the Week honors and was nationally ranked seven times in singles during the spring season.
Muamba won 26 singles matches on the year, posted a 15-6 record in the No. 1 slot and held a 6-1 mark in ASUN matches. He finished the season as the ninth-ranked singles player in the Atlantic Region.
Wilson received ASUN Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year accolades as well first team All-ASUN distinction, this spring. The Reigate, United Kingdom, native was also a unanimous selection to the ASUN All-Freshman team.
He finished second on the Flames with 22 total singles victories and went 12-5 in the No. 2 position in the lineup. Wilson also won six of his seven ASUN singles bouts and wrapped up his first season as the 17th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic Region. The freshman also managed to achieve a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average in his first year in Lynchburg as well.
Muamba and Burton garnered a No. 61 national ranking in doubles from the ITA on March 5 and collected three ranked doubles wins during the spring campaign. The pairing won 10 matches at the No. 1 position and went 12-8 overall in 2018-19. They also finished the year as the No. 10 doubles unit in the Atlantic Region.
Burton, a native of Naples, Fla., also received two major honors, ASUN Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award.
The Flames posted a 12-11 overall mark in 2019 and a 6-1 record in their first year in the ASUN, earning the No. 2 seed for the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship.
