Liberty Releases 2019 Volleyball Schedule

2019 Schedule

The Liberty volleyball team will face a challenging schedule, highlighted by trips to 2018 NCAA Tournament participants Texas State, Florida and Washington State, released today by second-year Head Coach Trevor Johnson.

This season's schedule features six opponents (FGCU, Florida, Northern Arizona, Northern Iowa, Texas State and Washington State) who competed in the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. Liberty will face four teams who finished the 2018 season in the top 25 in RPI, and two (Florida and Washington State) who appeared in the final AVCA Top 25. A total of eight opponents on the schedule won 20 or more matches last season.

Liberty will play 12 matches at the Vines Center this season, including a home tournament for the first time since 2017. The Lady Flames' top non-conference home game will be against Virginia Tech on Sept. 7 as part of the Liberty Volleyball Invitational.

The ASUN conference schedule features double round robin play, so Liberty will face each of the other eight conference members both home and away. Regular-season play will be of much importance this year, as only the top six teams qualify for the 2019 ASUN Volleyball Championship.

The season begins in San Marcos, Texas Aug. 30-31, at a tournament hosted by 2018 Sun Belt champion Texas State. The Lady Flames will take on the host Bobcats along with 2018 Missouri Valley champion Northern Iowa while in San Marcos.

The Lady Flames will open the home schedule with the Liberty Volleyball Invitational on Sept. 7-8, taking on Elon, Virginia Tech and Davidson. This will be the second year in a row hosting an ACC school, as Liberty swept Virginia on Sept. 11, 2018.

The next seven matches will be on the road, beginning with a Sept. 10 match at Virginia.

Liberty will compete in the state of Washington for the first time in program history, flying to Pullman, Wash., for the Washington State Invitational Sept. 13. While in Pullman, the Lady Flames will face UT Arlington, Idaho State and 2018 NCAA Sweet 16 participant Washington State.

A trip to Gainesville, Fla. on Sept. 20-21 rounds out Liberty's non-conference away schedule. Liberty is scheduled to face the host Gators, along with 2018 Big Sky champion Northern Arizona and Louisiana.

Liberty opens the conference schedule with three straight home matches, starting on Sept. 24 against defending ASUN champion FGCU.

The month of October will see Liberty play eight conference matches, six of which are on the road. In the middle of the month, the Lady Flames will host former Big South rival Winthrop on Oct. 22.

Liberty closes out the regular season with a home match against Kennesaw State, Nov. 17.

The 2019 ASUN Volleyball Championship will be a six-team tournament, held at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Fla., Nov. 21-23. The winner of the ASUN Volleyball Championship will earn the ASUN's automatic berth into the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

The 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship is scheduled to begin on Dec. 5.
