Liberty senior Eddie Gutierrez delivered a memorable moment on his Senior Day. His improbable point in Saturday's match against North Florida was featured as the No. 3 play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 Plays listing on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Gutierrez made the play during the second set with UNF's Jorge Nunez. The senior sprinted towards the net to save a ball. He flipped a shot over the net, but Nunez was waiting in close proximity on the other side of the net, ready for a forehand smash.
Nunez ripped an overhead forehand, which met the racquet of Gutierrez and sailed over the net and past Nunez.
Gutierrez won the match in three straight sets (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) in front of his home crowd in his final match at the Cook Tennis Center to give the Flames a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Ospreys. The Mexico City, Mexico, native led 5-4 in the third set and won a deuce point for the victory in the final game.
Gutierrez and the Flames (11-9, 5-0 ASUN) are off to their best conference start in program history and are tied for first place in the ASUN Conference with a perfect 5-0 mark. Liberty will battle Florida Gulf Coast (10-8, 5-0 ASUN) with first place on the line, Thursday at the FGCU Tennis Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
